The City Council of Gijón/Xixón developed a tourist application, based on Augmented Reality, with the aim of providing a tool that would serve as a complement to the traditional self-guiding system in tourist areas. The application allows you to observe the historical development of Gijón from Roman times to the present day through the cultural heritage of the Cimavilla neighbourhood.

The "AR Tours" applications are based on the digitalisation of two of the destination’s itineraries (Cimavilla and Between Centuries) that allow the user to visit tourist areas and resources, such as the City Walls, the Air Raid Shelter or the Celestino Solar Citadel.

By scanning markers located in different strategic points of the city, you can access virtual recreations of multiple historical spaces and interact with characters or objects, while a narrator describes the resource and details stories related to each of the tourist areas that are part of the tours.

This initiative aims to promote the enhancement of heritage and cultural resources with interesting proposals for multiple segments of tourist demand.
