A Business Intelligence tool for generating tourist intelligence and knowledge
The Tourist Intelligence System (SIT) used by the city of Buenos Aires is a tool that uses Big Data techniques to compile information from different public and private sources to develop different performance metrics and indicators for the tourism sector, which can be viewed on an interactive, dynamic scorecard.
The development of this initiative allows all the different information about tourism to be consolidated into one platform, resulting in high added value for administration management. As it is an Open Data tool, it also brings added value to tourism providers, and even to the residents of the destination.
Buenos Aires' SIT works on three levels:
- Database management systems to compile information from the different sources, implementing data correction controls.
- Data analysis through Data Analytics techniques to generate statistics and metrics.
- Based on all the data processed, the system displays the information in a Business Intelligence front layer, showing the information from six perspectives: international tourists, tourist mobility, travel planning, travellers on migratory routes, hotel competitiveness and air connections.
It is worth noting that the sources of information are selected based on the needs and specificities of the area and the priorities as set by its managers. This is why the platform makes use of both public and private sources, allowing it to access telephone data, flight websites and public agency data, among other types.
While this solution is largely aimed at optimising management through the creation of data-based tourist intelligence, it has an indirect impact on visitors as it allows tourist providers to improve their tourist products and/or services to give tourists a better experience in the destination.
