Kyoto Tourism Navi, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence to detect and predict tourist overcrowding and offer alternative routes

Kyoto Tourism Navi is an initiative developed by the Kyoto City Tourism Association in collaboration with private companies, which uses Artificial Intelligence to predict levels of tourist comfort throughout the city up to six months in advance. To achieve this, the tool analyses historic data from the last three years on variables such as the density of visits to certain urban locations, geo-location from mobile phones, the weather and the day of the week the destination was visited.

The results produced, which are available on the official Kyoto Tourist Office website, are classified into five levels of congestion, from "You can enjoy peaceful tourism" to "Occupied by lots of tourists". These results are constantly being updated, which makes the predictions increasingly precise and high quality. The tool also permits users to adjust the prediction through a questionnaire to reflect existing discrepancies between the comfort level indicated on the app and the perceived actual level.

The platform currently offers global indices about tourist density throughout the city of Kyoto and verifies the level of tourist comfort for three specific areas, locating the main points of interest and tourist attractions on a map of the destination while simultaneously estimating the level of crowding at different times for each one. Visitors can select the time of day at which they wish to visit the area, and based on the predicted level of crowding, the platform provides routes and plans for each of the areas, showing them on an interactive map.

The initiative aims to improve tourists' experiences by mitigating the negative effects of excessive tourism on the destination, and to optimise management by local administrators and authorities by de-centralising and rearranging tourist flows.
