Peñíscola Live The Game, mobile tourism application with gamification experience

Travellers who want to discover and find out about cultural values or nature in the destination they are visiting hope that their experience will be informative and entertaining, especially if they are travelling with children. Many destinations are therefore turning to games to segment their travellers and encourage them to enjoy different, immersive tourism experiences, which evoke pleasant feelings of anticipation about discovering the destination.

Peñíscola is a beach destination that stands out for its old town topped with a castle, which extends into the sea. This spot has been the site of historical events and also a film set. The app Peñíscola Live the Game was implemented in 2019. It offers travellers a different way to get close to the cultural heritage and history of the destination, with gamification components and the recreation of augmented reality in different locations. The app is also connected to the local agenda and highlights events.

It is available in the three languages of its most important markets: Spanish, as this destination mostly attracts national tourism from nearby places; French, its main international market; and English, the lingua franca for many travellers.

Peñíscola Live the Game provides three different functions: a 3D map of points of interest, an event agenda and a game.

  • The 3D map shows the film, adventure and pirate routes, another series of informative resources to complement the visit.
  • Other points of interest in the destination are also geo-located: tourist offices, play areas, children's parks and health centres.
  • The event agenda shows the locations, dates and times of events.
  • In the 3D game, tourists face challenges in augmented reality, answer questions and more.
