SmartWiFi Palma: the largest free municipal Wi-Fi network in Europe
SmartWiFi Palma: the largest free municipal Wi-Fi network in Europe. Since 2013, the city of Palma de Mallorca has implemented approximately 115 connection points, creating a world-leading public Smart Wi-Fi network. This project, a European frontrunner in the public-private collaboration model for rolling out public tourist Wi-Fi, has been driven by the local government of Palma de Mallorca and implemented together with its local partner MallorcaWiFi (Wiongo). The defining characteristics of this Smart Wi-Fi are as follows:
- It is free for the local government and for end users.
- It is an incentive for public-private collaboration.
- It is economically self-sustainable thanks to marketing, sponsorship and sales solutions.
- It is designed for areas with high levels of tourism where tourists are likely to use the Internet and information.
- It is widely available and has a capacity of up to 1000 nodes and 20,000 simultaneous users.
- It is ready to face the challenge from the IoT and Big Data, featuring a Customer Mobile Experience platform to monitor network use, a frontrunner in Spain, that allows decisions to be made that improve destination management and tourists' experiences.
- Access is integrated with Social WiFi, apps and new digital marketing tools (mobile geo-location services).
- It meets current national and European regulations and legal service guarantees, including traffic tracking.
- It is part of the WBA Open Roaming global standard.
In 2017, the EU highlighted the free Smart Wi-Fi in Palma de Mallorca and Playa de Palma as a guide of how to develop tourist Wi-Fi networks to the other island regions in Europe. In 2018, it was nominated to be among the three best urban Wi-Fi networks in the world by the Wireless Broadband Alliance.
