Lying on the banks of the Guadiana River, just six kilometres from Portugal, Badajoz is the capital of the largest province in Spain.
A tour of the old town will reveal walls of Arab origin, fascinating monuments and picturesque streets.
Badajoz is also a great starting point for visiting Tierra de Barros or Mérida.
All of them are places where you can sample the culinary delights of Extremadura.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme |
Badajoz joined the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme within the framework of the Spain-Portugal Cross-border Cooperation Operational Programme, together with the city of Elvas, going on to carry out the diagnosis and action plan needed for its transformation into a Smart Destination in September 2015. |

- Development of the Badajoz Destination Guide app.
- Implementation of a Tourist Intelligence System (TIS), which aims to connect various databases and cross-reference and process all the information to ultimately obtain a scorecard with a series of indicators so that the destination’s management body can make the right decisions.
- Training programs for business owners, entrepreneurs and citizens.
