Located in the south-west of Asturias, Cangas del Narcea is the largest municipality in Asturias. Traditionally isolated from the main urban centres due to its complex terrain, the municipality of Cangas del Narcea maintains a distinctly rural character, with 311 villages and a single urban centre. The whole province is crossed by an extensive river network that forms its numerous valleys.
The immense environmental value of its territory is recognised and protected by the Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña and Ibias Nature Reserve (Biosphere Reserve and Natura 2000 Network), which in turn encompasses the Muniellos Natural Reserve (containing the largest oak grove in Spain) and the Cueto de Arbas Partial Nature Reserve.
The historical town of Cangas and the Monastery of Corias are the main paragons of the monumental heritage present within the province, which features dozens of manors, palaces and churches inhabited by great noble lineages and religious houses. Constructions that coexist with more avant-garde works, such as the suspension bridge.
The most significant ethnographic elements are linked to traditional agriculture and livestock farming (brañas, cortinos, molinos and mazos) and to rural architecture made up of houses, hórreos and paneras (traditional raised granaries).
The heroic viticulture practised in the area is plain to see from the terraced landscape of its vineyards, which produce wines made from singular varieties under the PDO Cangas denomination.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme | Cangas del Narcea joined the Smart Tourism Destinations programme in 2020, and its Diagnosis Report and Action Plan were drawn up in 2021 for its ultimate transformation into a Smart Destination. |
