Caravaca de la Cruz is located in the Northwest Region of the Region of Murcia, bordering the provinces of Albacete, Almería and Granada.
With an important heritage and monumental legacy thanks to the settlements of various towns that took place since ancient times, it was a town of the Order of the Temple, later of that of Santiago and it is in this city, declared as such in 1849 by Isabel II, where it is located. Numerous religious orders were located there, Franciscans, Jesuits and Carmelites of San Juan de la Cruz and Santa Teresa.
Caravaca de la Cruz has been a Place of Pilgrimage since the “Lignum Crucis” appeared in 1231, so the True Cross has been venerated with great devotion. In 1998 it obtained the privilege of granting a Permanent Jubilee Year around the Sacred Relic, the first being celebrated in 2003 and, from then on every seven years, pilgrims who go to Caravaca obtaining plenary indulgence.
The Patron Saint Festivities are celebrated from May 1 to 5 and are declared of “International Tourist Interest”, in addition to the Wine Horse Festival recently being recognized as “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”.
