Enkarterri is the westernmost region of Bizkaia. It is located to the west of Bilbao, in a rural setting of great natural and heritage wealth known for its picturesque valleys, medieval villages and unique corners.
Balmaseda is the oldest town in the historical territory. The iconic old bridge crosses the river Kadagua and adds to an extensive medieval heritage made up of forges, tower houses and fortresses, such as Torre Loizaga, which houses the largest collection of Rolls-Royces in Europe.
The region holds a large number of records. The Pozalagua cave (Karrantza), located in the Armañón Nature Reserve, has one of the largest concentrations of eccentric stalactites in the world and is located in an environment covered with forests and vegetation.
The neighbouring Meatzaldea is the old ‘mining area’ of the territory. In the Triano Mountains and the Costa del Hierro, the Basque Country began its industrial revolution with the exploitation of opencast mines. The landscape has changed in appearance, but the vestiges of that time can still be seen in a fascinating journey from the bowels of the earth to the sea.
In addition, the local vegetable and livestock farms provide us with all kinds of zero-kilometre products that make Enkarterri a first-class gastronomic destination with an authentic local flavour.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme | The destination joins the DTI project in the 2023/2024 edition, with the elaboration of the Diagnosis and Action Plan in December 2024, for its transformation into a Smart Tourism Destination. |
