Rioja Alavesa is a region spanning 300 km², straddled to the south by the river Ebro and to the north by the imposing Sierra de Toloño mountain range. It is the first region to have earned the Biosphere tourism sustainability label (back in 2007).
With a population of some 12,000, it comprises 23 population centres in which roughly 300 wineries can be found. A territory where the culture of wine permeates everything and where conviviality and hospitality is a way of life.
The short distances between these municipalities and easy connections are a great excuse to explore fabulous landscapes dotted with vineyards, olive trees and ancient dolmens, medieval towns and walled sites, ancestral mansions and churches of silent beauty… not to mention countless wineries, which are now successfully combining tradition with modernity.
Aside from the unique experiences to be found among the vineyards and wineries and the breathtaking landscapes, travellers can enjoy wine festivals and events, cultural visits, wine therapy, nature activities, food and wine shopping, and much more besides, while they spend the night among wine barrels and vineyards in avant-garde hotels featuring spectacular designs, or perhaps in charming rural houses and hotels.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme | The destination joined the SD Network in June of 2022 and completed the Diagnosis Report and Action Plan for its transformation into a Smart Destination in the spring-summer of 2022. |
