Uribe is a region of the wider province of Biscay, made up of 24 municipalities: Arrieta, Bakio, Berango, Barrika, Derio, Erandio, Fruiz, Gamiz-Fika, Gatika, Gorliz, Larrabetzu, Laukiz, Leioa, Lemoiz, Lezama, Loiu, Maruri-Jatabe, Meñaka, Mungia, Plentzia, Sondika, Sopela, Urduliz and Zamudio.
It spans a total area of 332 km². Uribe is located to the northeast of Greater Bilbao and to the west of Urdaibai. Bilbao Airport is located in the region.
It is an agro-industrial region, with both agriculture (horticultural production, wine production, etc.) and industry (Biscay technology park and the industrial estates of Txorierri and Mungia) playing a major role.
Uribe, with a population of 144,000 inhabitants, welcomed a total of 175,000 tourists in 2019, who made 307,000 overnight stays.
It stands out in beach tourism due to its impressive Basque coast, in cultural and heritage tourism, and also in industrial, gastronomic and nature tourism. Uribe offers coastal and inland adventure, tradition and avant-garde, history and future, gastronomy, culture, sport, adventure, sprawling lush valleys that culminate in steep cliffs, beach, port and paths, medieval castle, Txakoli vineyards, fairs and festivals. Highlights include the sightseeing experiences around Txakoli wine and the geological treasures of the Flysch de Bizkaia rock formation.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme | The destination joined the SD Network in June of 2022 and completed the Diagnosis Report and Action Plan for its transformation into a Smart Destination in the spring-summer of 2022. |
