Lying between the cities of Teruel and Albarracín is the town of Gea de Albarracín, nestled on the side of a hill, as if lulled to sleep by the gentle murmur of the Guadalaviar river and with the fertile and multicoloured plains spreading out below it.
Gea de Albarracín is an Aragonese town located in the province of Teruel, in the Sierra de Albarracín mountain range and lying alongside the Guadalaviar river. It was a walled town, with only two gates that the local townsfolk call Portal del Molino and Portal de las Fraguas. Its construction is eminently Arab, with caged houses that look as if they are going to fall down at any moment, but which remain standing thanks to the strength of the timber.
A destination with a population of about 400 inhabitants and spanning 57.5 km2. Part of its municipal area is occupied by the protected natural landscape of the Pinares de Rodeno.
Gea de Albarracín is undergoing a change, aimed at turning tourism into one of the social and economic pillars of the municipality; hence its commitment to the Smart Destinations model.
Gea de Albarracín has a rich and valuable natural and cultural heritage. Its heritage includes the Roman Aqueduct, the convents of Carmen and Capuchinas, the Church of San Bernardo, the ancestral homes, the Moorish houses, and also the industrial heritage. There is also the archaeological site of Mar de Tethys, and considerable natural heritage in the form of the Protected Area of Pinares del Rodeno, among others. All of this, coupled with the sports area for boulder climbing, the Guadalaviar river, the network of footpaths and leisure areas, has enhanced the value of the area’s endogenous resources, making the municipality a point of interest and unique attraction for tourists within the Sierra de Albarracín mountain range.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme | The destination joined the Smart Tourism Destinations programme in February 2022 and completed the Diagnosis Report and Action Plan for its transformation into a Smart Tourism Destination between May to July of 2022. |
