The Island of Tenerife is the largest of the Canary archipelago and is part of insular Spain, geographically located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of West Africa.
It has an area of 2,034.4 km² and a population of 917,841 inhabitants, being the largest and most populated Canary Island in Spain.
In 2019, the Island received more than 6 million tourists, who spent close to 5.7 billion euros.

Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme |
- The island of Tenerife joined the Smart Tourism Destinations programme in 2020, and in September 2020 the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan (Strategic Lines) was carried out for its transformation into a Smart Tourist Destination.
- The Island of Tenerife has exceeded the requirements demanded by the SEGITTUR methodology, which means obtaining the Smart Tourist Destination distinction.

Outstanding initiatives

- Turismo de Tenerife, the public company of the Island Council, has a solid tourism policy based on its 2030 tourism strategy and works with the private sector on responsible and sustainable tourism, aligned with the SDGs. A tourism governance tool in the island area is INTEGRATUR.
- It also has an Innovation and digital talent area that works to create a local innovative tourism and technological ecosystem. And from the Economic Promotion area, with the brand Why Tenerife? and its Tenerife Work&Play initiative. The island has a powerful system of innovation and support for entrepreneurs.
- The Island Council has approved a 2020-2023 Modernization Plan, with which it has already made a qualitative leap in digital attention to citizens during the Covid19 pandemic, and which is based on solid principles of transparency, good governance ethics, participation and talent. It also has its Innovation Master Plan and the Smart Island plan in development. And it has just launched a Tourism Innovation Roundtable.
- Tenerife is an example of good practices in sustainable tourism: it has a tourism sustainability table with several years of experience, and a tourism sustainability plan.
- In addition, it works together with the private sector on responsible tourism certifications, is committed to renewable energies, and supports environmental management plans and support for local products. Currently working with the sector on a local compensation project for the carbon footprint of tourism.
- The Island has been working on accessible tourism for decades. In this sense, Tenerife Tourism is implementing policies to promote inclusive tourism, following the example of the municipality of Arona, a European benchmark.
