The island of Tenerife is the largest of the islands within the Canary Islands archipelago and is part of Spain’s island network, geographically located in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of West Africa.
It spans 2,034.4 km² and has a population of 917,841 inhabitants, making it the largest and most populated Canary Island in Spain.
In 2019, the island welcomed more than six million tourists, who spent around 5.7 billion euros.

Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme |
- The island of Tenerife joined the Smart Tourism Destinations programme in 2020, and its Diagnosis Report and Action Plan (Strategic Lines) were drawn up in September 2020 for its ultimate transformation into a Smart Destination.
- The island of Tenerife has passed the requirements of the SEGITTUR methodology, which means that it has earned its Smart Destination badge.

Outstanding initiatives

- Turismo de Tenerife, the public company attached to the Island Council, has a robust tourism policy based on its tourism strategy 2030 and works with the private sector towards responsible and sustainable tourism, aligned with the SDGs. A valuable tool for tourism governance at island level is INTEGRATUR.
- It also has an Innovation and Digital Talent area that works to create an innovative local tourism and technology ecosystem. Along with an Economic Promotion department, which has come up with the Why Tenerife? brand and Tenerife Work&Play initiative. The island offers a strong system of innovation and support for entrepreneurs.
- The Island Council has approved a Modernisation Plan 2020–2023, which has already generated a significant qualitative improvement in digital support for citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic, and which is based on the solid principles of transparency, ethics, good governance, participation and talent. It is also developing its Innovation Master Plan and Smart Island Plan. And it has just set up a Tourism Innovation Desk.
- Tenerife is a prime example of good practices in sustainable tourism: its sustainable tourism desk that has been in place for several years and it also has a sustainable tourism plan. It also works with the private sector on responsible tourism certifications, is committed to renewable energies, and supports environmental management plans and local product support. It is currently with the sector on a project for local compensation of the tourism carbon footprint.
- The island has been working for decades on accessible tourism. To succeed, Tenerife Tourism is implementing policies to promote inclusive tourism, following in the footsteps of the town of Arona, which is a benchmark within European.
