Crowning an island of deep cliffs to the north and long beaches to the south, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is a city that offers sun, beach and a rich and fascinating history.
Mild temperatures all year round mean that you can enjoy this cosmopolitan city no matter the season. The combination of aboriginal Guanche culture, colonial past, and the fact that it is located 90 miles off the African coast, give the island a character of its own; a fusion of European, American and African influences.
The capital of the eastern province of the Canary Islands has two key enclaves: Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the Port of Las Palmas, also known as Puerto de la Luz. Palm trees, which grow everywhere on the island, add an element of exoticism to an urban layout replete with cobbled streets. Meanwhile, the Port of Las Palmas has played a hugely important role since the 19th century and has strong commercial ties with Great Britain, allowing the city to boast beautiful modernist buildings.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme | Las Palmas de Gran Canaria joined the Smart Tourism Destinations programme by drawing up the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan needed to turn it into a Smart Destination, which it carried out in September of 2014. |
