Campo de Gibraltar is a region of Cadiz with its own historical identity, but with considerable territorial differences, featuring coastal inland, Atlantic and Mediterranean areas. A region with its own unique layout, including coastal and inland municipalities, and with strong industrial activity, given the presence of Gibraltar, making it a land of opportunities that also faces many challenges.
The Association of Municipalities of Campo de Gibraltar comprises eight municipalities, the largest being Algeciras, and the other seven being La Línea de la Concepción, San Roque, Los Barrios, Tarifa, Jimena de la Frontera, Castellar de la Frontera and San Martín del Tesorillo.
Its geostrategic location as a gateway from Europe to Africa and a link between the Mediterranean and Atlantic maritime areas has made it a key asset due to its socio-economic development.
The region also possesses a wide and diverse natural and cultural heritage and stunning landscapes. It so happens that 60% of its territory falls within the Network of Protected Natural Spaces of Andalusia.
The region’s tourist territory is extremely divergent, in that certain municipalities have achieved high levels of tourist development while in others tourism is incipient. It spans a total area of 1,523.64 km2 and has a population of some 270,000 inhabitants.
The industrial sector, energy production and chemicals, together with logistics, are the main economic activities.
Campo de Gibraltar offers all sorts of tourism, including sports and adventure, nature, ornithological, nautical, sun and beach, gastronomic and cultural.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme | Campo de Gibraltar joined the Smart Tourism Destinations programme in 2020, and its Diagnosis Report and Action Plan were drawn up in the spring of 2021 for its ultimate transformation into a Smart Destination. |
