The Jerte Valley, located in the northeast of the province of Cáceres, flanked by the highest mountains in Extremadura and irrigated by crystal clear waters, is a privileged natural enclave that takes its name from the river that runs through it.
The eleven municipalities that make up the Jerte Valley Commonwealth are: Barrado, Cabezuela del Valle, Cabrero, Casas del Castañar, El Torno, Jerte, Navaconcejo, Piornal, Rebollar, Tornavacas, Valdastillas. Four of them located on the banks of the Jerte River and the rest flanking the slopes of the mountain ranges that delimit it, the Sierra de Tormantos and Montes de Traslasierra.
The relief is the main protagonist, with altitudes ranging between 350 and 2,500 meters. This variation in height and the multiple orientations allow for numerous ecosystems: riverside forest, holm oak meadows, oak groves, bushes and high mountain grasslands, along with a cultivated cherry forest, with the presence of chestnut and olive trees.
It has a total area of 372 km2 and a population of 11 thousand inhabitants.
The Jerte landscape is the work of nature, but also of the centuries-old activity of man, converting the cultivated landscape into one of the hallmarks of its identity and at the same time it is one of its greatest assets. The balance between agriculture and the environment, the declaration of a protected natural area, landscape biodiversity, a dynamic agrarian society, among other factors have been key to still maintaining a “living” and well-preserved natural environment.
Practically the entire Jerte Valley is covered under some form of natural protection, since two networks of protected spaces converge, on the one hand, the Natura 2000 Network and, on the other, the Network of Natural Spaces. Protected from Extremadura. Being the central jewel of this natural heritage, the “La Garganta de los Infiernos” Natural Reserve with a variety of ecosystems, fauna and flora that have made it an icon of the Jerte Valley. In this enclave, “Los Pilones” stands out, considered one of the most beautiful natural bathing areas in the world.
The Jerte Valley, known internationally for its cherries and for “The Cherry Blossom”, has enough attractions to captivate and excite the visitor throughout the 365 days of the year, with enormous biodiversity, with beautiful corners, with towns that have managed to preserve their traditions and culture, with excellent and careful gastronomy and countless leisure and adventure resources.
And the Valley has managed to make its way as one of the most consolidated rural destinations in Extremadura, with the motto “COLOR AND LIFE”, which supports the tourism strategy, linked to the values, authenticity and sustainability of the Jerte Valley. , and there cannot be a better place to experience nature, step by step, than the Jerte Valley through its four seasons.
