Peñíscola - Smart Tourist Destination

Peñíscola is a city on the Mediterranean coast, located north of the Valencian Community, in the province of Castellón and is one of the main tourist destinations in the province and on the Costa de Azahar.

Peñíscola known for its sun and beach tourism; It offers visitors the charm of Mediterranean fishing villages.

It has a special focus on family tourism, being the first Spanish coastal destination with the Family Tourism seal. In addition to its beaches, it has resources such as the Templar Castle of Papa Luna and the historic center, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC) as a Historical Site since 1972. It also has an exceptional natural heritage, represented in the Sierra de Irta.

The city has been the setting for the filming of numerous films, such as El Cid starring Charlton Heston and Sofia Loren or the award-winning series Game of Thrones.

Peñíscola completes its approach with a gastronomic, cultural, leisure and MICE tourism offer that helps alleviate the seasonality usually associated with sun and beach destinations.

Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme

Peñíscola joined the Smart Tourist Destinations project in 2019 with a Diagnostic Report and Action Plan for its transformation into a Tourist Destination, which is reviewed and transitioned to the new methodology in July 2024.

It is in the certification phase in the Biosphere program, constantly working to be a pioneering destination in terms of sustainability.
The city is implementing a tourism sustainability plan and different actions focused on achieving the SDGs and the 2030 Agenda.
Peñíscola participates in the Valencian Community DTI project and is integrated into various collaboration networks, among which the Network of the Most Beautiful Towns in Spain, SICTED, blue trails stands out.
