Plasencia is a medium-sized city, with around 40,000 inhabitants, located in the northern part of the province of Cáceres and in the northern third of the autonomous community of Extremadura.
It is about 85 km from Cáceres, 120 km to the north with Salamanca and about 250 with Madrid. The border with Portugal is only 90 kilometers away.
Its economy is based on the service sector: hospitality, commerce and others shared with nearby populations, such as health, banking, educational, administrative services, etc. Not in vain is it the nerve center and administrative center of regions such as Monfragüe, La Vera, Valle del Jerte, Valle del Ambroz, Granadilla, Gata or Las Hurdes. These regions contribute to the city, from the tourist point of view, an important natural attraction.
In terms of tourism and monuments, the city has a well-preserved complex of palaces, churches, stately homes, etc. Likewise, it has two cathedrals, an aqueduct, medieval walls, etc.

- It is part of associations such as the network of Jewish quarters, the network of cathedral cities and the Integral System of Spanish Tourist Quality in Destinations (SICTED). Likewise, the city belongs to the Smart City project and is a member of the “Birding in Extremadura” Product Club.
- Development of digitization projects such as the Destino Plasencia totem application and interactive screens, free Wi-Fi network connection, audio guide service on the city’s monuments and download of tourist information such as maps, historical sites, trails and routes and thematic guides of Extremadura.
- Accessible and inclusive tourism plan with accessibility routes through the historic center. The tourist office also has a museum for the blind.
- Development of internationally recognized events such as the International Folk Music Festival that is held annually, outstanding sporting events where the city has been chosen as the European headquarters for cycling tourism in 2023, Tuesday Mayor or Holy Week that opt to be recognized festivals of tourist interest national.
