A noble Medieval Biscayan town located on the left bank of the Nervion Estuary, founded in 1322 by María Díaz de Haro, it is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Bizkaia Bridge and the Northern Pilgrim’s Route to Santiago de Compostela.
On 13 July 2006, the Bizkaia Bridge was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This work, inaugurated on 28 July 1893, perfectly synthesises architectural and functional aspects. Its ferry, a mobile platform suspended over the Nervión estuary, allows people and vehicles to be transported between the two banks. It is also possible to cross the Bizkaia Bridge on a pedestrian footbridge, some 60 metres high, which allows us to enjoy its marvellous panoramic views.
Portugalete forms part of the Way of St. James, on its Northern Way, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 5 July 2015.
The Way runs through the Old Town and the main artery of modern Portugalete. The Noble Villa has a Municipal Hostel for Pilgrims.
