Salamanca is a university city like no other. Its university, one of the oldest in Europe, gives the city its open and diverse character.
Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988, the city lies on the banks of the river Tormes, bringing together an exceptional display of varying styles of universal art.
Salamanca spans a total area of 39 km2 and has a population of some 144,000 inhabitants.
The service sector is the main activity, especially cultural and language services, with tourism also falling within this sector.
In 2019, the regulated accommodation of Salamanca welcomed around 770,000 tourists. Counting also the 256,000 or so day-trip visitors, the destination received more than one million visitors over the course of the year. The estimated tourist expenditure for Salamanca exceeds 260 million euros per year.

Outstanding initiatives

- Excellent management work carried out by Tourism of Salamanca. It has an efficient management body, which communicates and works closely with the private sector.
- The city supports its productive fabric and ecosystem of entrepreneurs, while also working on innovative projects such as EDUSI TORMES+. In the realm of social innovation, the City Council promotes citizen engagement and there is even a “Regulation for democratic participation in the city of Salamanca”.
- The Smart City Salamanca project is currently being developed, involving the deployment of sensors across the city.
- Salamanca fosters integral sustainability and has been outstanding in ensuring conservation and promotion of cultural heritage, environmental conservation and energy efficiency, both in municipal buildings and in public lighting by switching to LED lighting. It works to combat climate change by championing circular economy, and also supports the local economy. It has been releasing sustainability indicators since 2010.
- There is a Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan in place and the use of bicycles is promoted through the “SALenBICI” bicycle lending system.
- It has been working for a long time towards accessible tourism. Salamanca has a Municipal Board for Disability, and also works on accessibility in tourism, with both a Strategic Accessibility Plan and an Accessibility Office up and running.
