Santander is a superb tourist destination and a national and international benchmark for tourism. The destination has successfully reinvented and transformed itself into a city of huge appeal for tourism in every sense of the word: beaches, leisure, shopping, gastronomy, sports, meetings and congresses, etc.
It is a leading destination for meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) tourism and also a benchmark in cultural tourism (Centro Botín, museums, festivals, etc.).

The city of Santander joined the Smart Tourism Destinations programme in 2018, and its Diagnosis Report and Action Plan were drawn up in the spring of 2019 for its ultimate transformation into a Smart Destination.
Santander has passed the requirements of the SEGITTUR methodology, which means that it has earned its Smart Destination badge. |

- Santander is a fine example of a smart city, as it is committed to technology and sustainability to increase the well-being of the population, both core elements of a smart tourist destination.
- Santander’s innovative drive is strategic in nature, having taken on a leading role at both national and international level in developing the concepts of smart city and smart citizen.
- The destination does an excellent job in tackling sustainability from all angles: cultural, environmental and socio-economic, through, among others, the key role of the Santander Creativa Cultural Foundation, the Santander Climate Change Office, the Local Development Agency and the Municipal Trade Support Office.
- The city has effective governance instruments such as the Santander Strategic Plan 2010–2020, the Santander Smart City Strategic Plan and EDUSI Santander 2014–2020. It also takes part in multiple European projects, including: NETFFICIENT, Urban Waste, City Brain, etc.
- Santander has long been committed to urban accessibility and has a Department of Personal Autonomy that works in this direction.
