Torremolinos, a legendary destination for international tourism since the 1950s, offers travellers a modern seaside town that retains all the Andalusian charm of the old fishing and milling village it once was. A protagonist of the tourist boom of the 60s and 70s, this enclave seduces visitors with its sprawling beaches bathed in the blue of the Mediterranean, a warm climate all year round and exquisite gastronomy.
Torremolinos, lying next to Malaga, is a strategic point from which to visit the most attractive corners of Andalusia. Located in the south of Spain, this city of almost 70,000 inhabitants offers much more than just sun and beach. Torremolinos is culture, sport, hiking, gastronomy, fun and relaxation all in one. Above all, Torremolinos is an open, welcoming and friendly destination.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme |
Torremolinos joined the Smart Destinations project by drawing up the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan needed to turn it into a Smart Destination, which it carried out in 2019. |
Outstanding initiatives
|
- Avante Torremolinos Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy, which pursues the overall goal of ensuring the physical and social cohesion of the city and its surrounding area by looking to modernise the city’s economic base, providing efficient and people-oriented public services and pushing the city forward in a sustainable and intelligent way.
- Consolidated presence in different entities and organisations, such as Turismo Costa del Sol, the Association of Municipalities of the Costa del Sol, and Alianza de Municipios Turísticos.
- “Smart Costa del Sol” initiative, which includes Torremolinos City Council and which seeks to promote digital infrastructure with the aim of improving the social and economic well-being of its citizens.
- Involvement in the European programme “”Coasting plus. Transferring Integrated Coastal Governance for Sustainable Tourism”. A ground-breaking pilot project in sustainable tourism that promotes the ‘Coastal Contract’ methodology as a key instrument enabling Spain‘s green transition in the process of social and economic reconstruction. Key actions here include a study into the feasibility of installing an offshore wind farm within the municipality and implementing the “Torremolinos circular sea” programme, in collaboration with the fishing, tourism and hospitality sectors.
