The capital of the Basque Country is a thousand-year-old city that preserves intact its Medieval Old Town, one of the most outstanding in northern Spain. The city is nestled in an environment of great biological and landscape richness, with a strategic location 40 minutes from Bilbao and three hours from Madrid.
Vitoria-Gasteiz was the first Spanish city to be named European Green Capital by the European Commission, a recognition that was later added to that of Global Green City. Another of the outstanding aspects in terms of sustainability is the Green Belt that surrounds the city, a set of large parks with wetlands, forests and recreational spaces, widely used for sports.
Vitoria-Gasteiz is also a thousand-year-old city and preserves intact the original layout of its almond-shaped Medieval Quarter. Without forgetting, likewise, the great local food and wine tradition, with special mention of pintxos and wine culture.
Regarding the MICE field, the city offers great proximity between the meeting venues and the main tourist attractions. These venues include the historic Palacio Villa Suso and the Palacio de Congresos Europa, a Passivhaus building with LEED Gold certification, which has become a benchmark for sustainable architecture.
Admission to the Smart Tourism Destinations Programme | Vitoria-Gasteiz joined the Smart Tourist Destinations project through the preparation of the Diagnostic Report and Action Plan for the transformation of Vitoria-Gasteiz into a Smart Tourist Destination, carried out in May 2020 and has completed the follow-up as of May 2023. |
